Town in Cambridgeshire, E England, on the
river Ouse, 26 km/16 mi NW of Cambridge;
population (1981) 17,467. It is a market town
with a number of light industries. A bridge
built in 1332 connects Huntingdon with
Godmanchester on the S bank of the river, and
the two towns were united in 1961. Samuel
Pepys and Oliver Cromwell attended the
grammar school founded 1565 in a 12th-century
building, formerly part of the medieval
hospital; it was opened in 1962 as a Cromwell
museum. The Environmental Information Centre
was opened 1989.
